0

The Statue of Unity and other tourist spots around it are set to become much more accessible as the government is planning to build a new airport in Gujarat’s Narmada district, The Financial Express has said in a report.

Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani held a meeting with the Airports Authority of India (AAI) chairman Guruprasad Mohapatra on Tuesday to discuss the plan. The state told the AAI that the Narmada district administration has started the process of identifying land for an airstrip in Rajpipla. The area where the airport is likely to come up is around 23 kilometer away from the Statue of Unity, which is located near the Sardar Sarovar Dam in Narmada district’s Kevadia.

A rail link to Kevadi village is already under construction. President Ram Nath Kovind had laid the foundation stone for the Kevadiya railway station in December 2018. It is coming up 5 kilometer away from the statue.

The Statue of Unity is often seen as a stand alone attraction. However, it is one of the many tourist attractions that the government has been developing in this area. The tourist hub that is being planned near the Statue of Unity will offer adventure activities, water sports and ecotourism.

tent city will come up near Sadhu Bet, the island on which the Statue of Unity has been erected. It will be developed on the lines of Gujarat’s famous Kutch Winter festival and have around 250 tents in the first phase. Unlike the Rann Utsav, the tent city will remain operational throughout the year.

Boating facilities have also received approval in the Karjan and Sardar Sarovar dams. Islands showcasing tribal culture are being developed as part of this project. Kerala style houseboats are also being considered for boosting tourism. The jetty for this boating facility will be 23 km away from the Statue of Unity.

The ‘valley of flowers’ project is also part of the tourist attractions in the region. Modi had suggested the project himself when he visited the region in 2003 and work began in 2012-13. More than one lakh plants have been planted as part of this project. This will add to the natural beauty around the Statue of Unity. The government plans to spend around Rs 12 crore on the valley of flowers.

Chennai’s Water Woes May Soon Be History As City To Get Five Mini-Desalination Plants

0

In a bid to tackle the city’s water woes, authorities are looking to set up five min-desalination plants in Chennai at the cost of Rs 120 crore, reports The Times of India.

The plants will be established in the areas of Kasimedu, Thiruvottiyur, Triplicane, MRC Nagar and Thiruvanmiyur in the next six months.

“Everyone knows Chennai is facing a water crisis. Since we lack perennial sources, we decided to set up mini-desalination plants that will cater to specific areas. The areas selected under the project are heavily dependent on groundwater sources that have now completely gone dry. Each of these plants can cater to at least 1 lakh people,” a Metrowater senior engineer stated.

The advantage of setting up min-plants is that not a lot of space is required to be allocated, while it is also more easy to get various clearances such as those from the central and state pollution board.

Currently, a feasibility study is being carried out for the plants. Pipelines will also be put in place to connect the said desalination plants with the closest water distribution centres.

0

The new Bharatiya Janata Party-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government will come into existence tomorrow when Prime Minister-elect Narendra Modi takes the oath of office at 7 pm and will swing into action without much delay. Among other things, the new government, which in its older avatar between 2014 and 2019 received praise for building more roads than the United Progressive Alliance regime and doing so faster, wants to double down on improving connectivity in the country.

According to the Hindustan Times, on the government’s agenda will be to the roll out of 1,000 km of national highway projects in its first 100 days in office. This will be part of the ministry target to award 6,020 km of roads, which will be built at an estimated cost of around 87,000 crore, in the financial year 2019-20.

Under Nitin Gadkari, the ministry had built highways spanning nearly 35,000 km between 2014 and 2019. The Congress-led UPA-II, in comparison, added nearly 24,000 km to the country’s national highway network in five years.

The ministry had also managed to increase the speed of construction of national highways to 20.5 km per day from around 13.5 km per day during the UPA-II era. According to non-profit organisation Accountability Initiative, project completion time has also fallen from two years between 2008 and 2011 under UPA to less than six months in 2016-17 under the Modi government.

Fulfilling a long-pending demands of Mysore residents for a flight connection to Bengaluru, the Union Government has introduced flights from Mysuru to Bengaluru beginning 7 June, Star Of Mysore has reported.

The route will be operated as part of the third phase of Modi government’s Regional Connectivity Scheme (RCS) or UDAN Scheme (Ude Desh Ka Aam Nagrik),

Newly elected Mysuru-Kodagu MP Pratap Simha announced that Alliance Air, a subsidiary of Air India, will operate the 70-seater ATR-72 on the route five days a week barring Tuesdays and Wednesdays.

Pratap Simha expressed optimism that the new flights between the cultural capital Mysuru and the State capital Bengaluru will give further impetus to the economic development and increase the tourist potential of Mysuru.

Pratap Simha in his press release also mentioned that TruJet flight that began its daily operations on 20 September 2017 from Mysuru to Chennai has turned profitable and that is a good sign.

He then added saying that under UDAN-3 scheme Mysuru has also bagged four routes which are to Goa, Kochi, Belagavi and Hyderabad.

Pratap Simha credited and thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi and former Civil Aviation Minister Jayant Sinha for ensuring the inclusion of Mysuru in the UDAN-3 scheme.

TruJet is currently operating a daily flights to Chennai from Mysuru with an impressive 95 per cent occupancy rate and many expect Mysuru-Bengaluru flights to achieve the same level of success.

An earlier flight service introduced between Mysuru and Bengaluru introduced in 2016-17 was later withdrawn due to poor patronage and operated flights only during Dasara festival.

Poor patronage was attributed to the schedule of the Alliance Air flights which departed from Bengaluru for Mysuru at 6 am and returning to Bengaluru at 8 am.

The new timings are regarded as very convenient for people who are taking connecting flights, both domestic and international, from the Bengaluru Airport.

The flights from Bengaluru, AI 9539 will depart from the Kempegowda International Airport (KIA) at 10.30 am and arrive at the Mysore Airport in Mandakalli at 11.25 am. The flight from Mysuru, flight AI 9540 will depart at 12 noon and arrive at KIA, Bengaluru at 1 pm.

Under the UDAAN scheme which has a price cap and subsidies, the fare for the one-hour Bengaluru-Mysuru flight is Rs.1,580 (Rs. 1,365 if booked on the Air India website).

Delhi Airport Introduces TaxiBot System To Move Aircraft From Parking Bay To Runway; Help Save Money, Reduce Pollution

0

Starting today, Delhi Airport would help airlines save 213 litres of aviation fuel daily with the help of TaxiBots, the Hindustan Times reports. According to officials, TaxiBots are the semi-autonomous vehicle that would enable the aircraft to cover the distance between the parking bay and runway, without igniting engines.

Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL) said that Delhi airport is the world’s first recipient of such technology. Apart from saving fuel, the facility would dial down the carbon dioxide emission, reduce wear and tear of the aircraft and decrease the probability of jet blast incidents and at the same time, save money.

The TaxiBot is like a tow vehicle and connected to an aircraft’s front wheel. DIAL CEO said that airlines would save 213 litres of fuel per flight, which “translates into a saving of $35 million annually for domestic carriers.”

A DIAL spokesperson, on Monday (27 May) said, that seven to eight Spice Jet flights would use TaxiBot every day. There have been around 400 trail flights using the TaxiBots for the last eight months at the Delhi Airport, saving 2.36 lakh Kg carbon dioxide, 83,265 litres of fuel, 27.3 hours of time and 51 hours of engine life.

Currently, DIAL is operating only two TaxiBots at the Delhi airport but in the next four years, the number will go up to 15. “Initially the TaxiBots will be used only for the departing flights. As their number increases, we will also facilitate the arriving flights,” a DIAL spokesperson said.

CEO Jaipuriar said, “We are excited to introduce this advanced taxiing solution that is operationally efficient and environmentally-friendly.”

NHAI Looks To Raise Rs 5,000 Crore From Third Auction Of Toll Collection Rights On National Highways

The Government of India’s Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) is all set to auction off over 550 km of national highways to private companies to operate and collect tolls in a bid to add thrust to its asset monetisation plan, reports The Economic Times.

This would mark the third such auction being organised by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) under the toll-operate-transfer (TOT) model. The stretches of roads under the bind in the auction are in Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and Jharkhand, and the auction is set to take place next month. The NHAI expects the auction to fetch the ministry over Rs 5,000 crore.

In a bid to generate more resources to fund the infrastructure projects and to attract private sector funding, the ministry had come up with the novel auction model of the TOT in 2016 under the deft leadership of the then minister heading MoRTH. Under the programme, bidders make a one-time lump sum payment in return for long-term toll collection rights.

The first such auction took place in February 2018 under which the ministry gained a windfall as it earned a value of Rs 9,681 crore against the NHAI’s expectation of Rs 6,258 crore. The second auction though didn’t elicit a similar response in which the highest bid was much lesser than even the expectation as a result of which the auction round was cancelled.

The state government was represented by Sudhanshu Shrivastav and Manish Goyal while advocate Vinit Sankalp represented the temple trust.

Indian Railways’ MRVC To Build France-Like Double Design Bridges At Mumbai Railway Stations

0

The Mumbai Railway Vikas Corporation (MRVC) plans to adopt the double discharge design at various railway stations, the Financial Express reports. The double design discharge uses two landings on the platform and is famously used in France.

An MRVC official said that the upper landing would be equipped with an escalator and the lower deck would consist of a staircase with a little horizontal space in between them.

The model can only be implemented at bridges which have an upper deck of minimum 10 m width and a connection to the top floor via an internal staircase.

Another MRVC official said that currently all the double discharge bridges are planned on the Western Railway zone, before being accommodated at Railway stations on the Central Railway zone.

Officials said that the move aims to increase the capacity of stations without building FOBs as it is the ideal solution considering the space constraint on platforms. The double discharge bridges would also clear the passenger load at an increased speed.
