India’s Solar Power Generation Creates Milestone As It Touches 11.3 TWh In January-March 2019 Quarter

0

India’s dedicated efforts to boost its solar power generation capacity has now added a new feather to its nest full of achievements in the domain of renewable energy. The country for the first time in history has crossed the milestone of producing ten terawatt hours (TWh) of solar energy in a single quarter, reports Clean Technica.

India generated 11.3 TWh of solar energy in the January-March 2019 quarter as per data reported by the Central Electricity Authority (CEA). Furthermore, in March 2019, the power generation reached an all-time monthly high of 4.3 TWh and accounted for 38 per cent of the quarter’s overall solar power generated.

It should be noted here that every year’s first quarter usually witnesses a jump in power generation due to clearer skies. Also, overall, in the entire financial year of 2018-19, the net power generation in India jumped by a massive 51 per cent over the previous year, reaching 38.9 TWh.

The Government of India has accorded utmost priority to the generation of power from renewable and new sources and aspires to generate as much as 175 gigawatts (GW) of power from the same by 2022. Of that value, India wants to create at least 100 GW of energy using solar energy.

Indian Raliways To Build Major Rail Auto Hub Facility Near Ennore Port In Chengalpet Aimed At Ford, Renault Plants

0

The Southern Railway (SR) plans to have another rail auto hub facility at the Singaperumalkoil station near Chengalpet making it the second rail auto hub in India after Walajabad station near Kancheepuram, the Times of India reports.

The decision comes following a 60 per cent increase in revenue for the SR in 2018-19 from the auto sector, against 53 crores in the previous year.

Various international automobile companies which have a shop around Sriperumbudur are using trains to ship their cars to Gujarat, North East region, North India and also the Chennai and Ennore Port for export.

According to a senior official, the Ennore Port, exports around 1.7 lakh cars annually and recently converted a rail facility to an automobile unloading facility. The SR already has a seamless rail network from every part of the city and suburbs to the port.

While automobile companies are currently opting to transport cars via roads, but are considering options with railways due to connectivity, road congestion and fluctuation in diesel prices.

The construction of the new station would benefit companies as the Walajabad station is 130 km away from the Ennore Port and even further from Ford’s Maraimalai Nagar facility and Renault’s Oragadam facility.

The Singaperumalkoil station is only 76 km from the Ennore Port, and 2.5 km and 9 km for Fords’ and Renault’s plant respectively. Further Walajabad is a single line section, compared to Singaperumakoil, which has three lines. The station also has space to park 100 cars.

Sources said that the automobile players have already had a round of talks and a spot visit to verify if the rail vehicles can transport their finished cars to the Singaperumalkoil station.

To ensure the passengers of all age groups do not have to worry about slippery floors, the Delhi International Airport (DIAL) has now come up with slip resistant floor, reports Financial Express.

As the carpet covering was removed from the floor, it became too slippery and even forced the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) to replace the shoes of its 4,000 plus personnel, guarding one of the busiest airports in the country.

The worn out parts of the carpets are getting done away with and cleaning of the remaining pieces that are in good condition is in full swing. Of the 1,70,000 sqm carpet, 30,000 sqm will be removed, starting from both sides of the travellator in the departure piers of T3.

As per the report, many flyers have complained about the slow movement of trolleys on the carpet. Also, security officials have mentioned difficulties in walking dog squad.

Built in 2010, the T3 of the DIAL is constructed at the cost of Rs 6,750 crore. The gigantic carpet covering was manufactured in Mulshi near Pune and was transported in pieces to the airport.

Chennai Airport’s Main Runway To Be Powered By Solar Panels Under AAI’s Go Green Initiative

0

Chennai Airport has identified land in the northern corner of the main runway, close to the Pallavaram side to install solar panels, the Times of India reports citing officials.

The Airport Authority of India (AAI) had planned to install the solar panels to reduce the dependence from the power grid at Chennai airport. The tender was issued last year and has been given to a contractor who is in the process to install the panels on the 8.58-acre land.

The panels will generate around 6.5 Mega Watt peak (MWp) power, which would then be connected to the grid. The project is a part of the AAI’s ‘Go Green’ initiative, which also includes the installation of LED lights at terminals and airfield. The estimated cost of the project is Rs 44 crore.

The power generated from the panels are set to be used at terminals, and the remaining balance of 11KV would be supplied to the grid via a sub-station, an official said. Chennai Airport already has roof-top solar panels at the cargo complex generating 5MW power.

The airport lights are already converted into LED by the AAI. Last year for disaster relief, they had purchased six sets of LED base lights, which can also be charged using solar energy.

The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) has stepped up efforts to ensure that land and transmission facilities are in place for developers who partake in auctions conducted by the Solar Energy Corporation of India (SECI), reports Economic Times.

MNRE officials, last week held discussions with the state government counterparts in Gujarat, Andhra Pradesh, Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh to find out how much land each state is willing to set aside for renewable energy projects. Similar meetings with officials from Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu and Karnataka would take place soon.
