Pillar Of No Strength: BMRCL Seeks 10 Days To Fix Faulty Metro Structure Near Bengaluru’s MG Road

After reports of honeycombing of concrete in one of the pillars between the MG Road and Trinity Circle Metro Stretch, Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) has asked for about 10 days for the entire work to be completed.

Deccan Herald quoted Ajay Seth, Managing Director of BMRCL, as saying, “The repair work can be completed in just two days. But, the preparation itself requires about 5 to 6 days. Our engineers are already busy installing the steel platform supported by stilts to carry out the repairs. Further, technical experts will decide on the future course of action.”

Due to the damage in one of the viaducts, trains have been slowing down to the minimum possible speed near the metro stations.

Furthermore, one of the engineers of BMRCL was quoted as saying, “We have been carrying out ultrasonic scans to assess the extent of damage to the cemented area. The results will give us insight into the requirement of raw material needed to carry out the repair work.”

Due to the viaducts being prepared at the project site, tests couldn’t be carried out. Hydraulic jacks that can lift up to 125 tonnes are being used by BMRCL to help carry out the repairs. High-quality cement will be used for the repairs.

The Bengaluru Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) maintenance team during a regular inspection found a mysterious coarse and rocky object, resembling a ‘honeycomb’ on the concrete beam near the Trinity Metro Station. As a result, the Purple Line is facing slowed down services, Deccan Herald has reported.

Due to repair work in progress by engineers, various speed restrictions are imposed on the trains travelling on the Purple Line between Mysore Road and Byappanahalli, making the trains run late by at least 15 minutes.

Karnataka Chief Minister, H D Kumaraswamy, who was in Belagavi, said, “Somewhere near Miller’s Road, one column has collapsed. This came to my notice two days ago itself. Yesterday (Tuesday), the experts did a check and said that it’s okay to run trains at slow speeds and that the problem can be rectified. Still, I’ve asked them to cross-check.”

Various factors lead to the growth of honeycombs in concretes, of which one is a poor cement-to-water ratio, which reduces its workability.

“While regular inspections were carried out by our maintenance team, a honeycomb under the concrete beam was found, and soon the BMRCL engineers were alerted. The restoration work is in progress now,” Yeshwanth Chavan, PRO, BMRCL said while adding they would need three days to complete the repair work.

On Wednesday evening, there were messages circulated on Whatsapp saying the metro pillar is twisted and asked users to avoid the line and road.

Clarifying the message as wrong and misleading, Chavan said, “It is clarified there is no twisting of any pillars. We have raised a steel platform to do corrective action. Tests are being conducted by the engineers and no harm is suspected from this.”

The phase II project of the Chennai Metro has avoided major hurdles after the Ministry of Urban Development (MoUD) on Monday (10 December) clarified it is not mandatory for ‘Made in India’ trains to operate, reports the Hindu.

According to sources cited it the report, the MoUD waved green flags for the expansion of the project, because the loan with Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), demanded that the major components need to be from Japan only.

Earlier, the state government was informed by the MoUD that Chennai Metro Rail phase II will need to have trains made in India. However, the loan from JICA came at the condition that 30 per cent of the components of trains and signalling system need to be from Japan, leading to a halt in project’s progress.

However, on Monday (10 December), sources said the condition had been revoked. “We received a communication that [this condition] can be done away with. We have already had discussions with JICA and everything has been finalised; now, it is just a formality to get their sanction. It will be over in no time,” the source said.

The phase II project will sprawl upto 108 km with 116 metro stations. The estimated cost of the project is Rs 80,000 crore. The project will begin with the first 50 km costing the Chennai Metro Rail Rs 44,000 crore. The route includes 58 stations on Madhavaram to CMBT and Madhavaram to Sholinganallur routes. Both of the stretches of metro will be partially underground and partially elevated.

The land acquisition of nearly 800 properties and soil testing in various parts of the city have already begun.

A public-private partnership (PPP) model with the Bangalore Development Authority (BDA) is set to be explored by the Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) concerning the construction of metros on NICE Road and the Peripheral Ring Road (PRR) respectively, Deccan Herald reported.

The Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) has been instructed by the Urban Development Department to prepare a feasibility report regarding the project after a suggestion was made by S Mohandas Hedge, former secretary of the Karnataka Congress Committee.

Hegde wrote to the additional chief secretary pitching for the PPP model to be used as an instrument to deliver a metro station to the commuters as early as possible.

The city is set to gain its second metro ring under this plan earlier than expected. The PPP’s ability to significantly reduce the burden of foreign loans was cited as an advantage in the proposal. The department’s letter suggests that besides BDA, “NICE may also be entrusted with on hybrid annuity basis.”

Tenders for the elevated stretch are under consideration. The first part of the first Metro ring will be completed under Phase 2A between KR Puram and silk board junction. The government also proposed to complete the remaining stretches of the outer ring road (ORR) under Phase 3.

The Bangalore Metro Rail Employees Union has alleged that Rs 40 core of Namma Metro is getting lost due to discrepancies in management, financial irregularities and special treatment to contract employees, Economic Times has reported. A cause of huge inconvenience for the riders, the union had struck work for seven hours last year in protest.

“Namma Metro need not wait for ridership to touch five lakh a day to break even. It can report a profit if the management takes the initiative to fix a few anomalies,” said Surya Narayana Murthy, vice-president of the union and former employee of Namma Metro.

Further, he suspects a scam in payment of monthly bills for private cab companies which pick and drop officials for on-site inspection. “For years, the BMRCL has been spending Rs 50 lakh a month towards payment to the cab agencies. How could the monthly bill be so huge when there are only 50-odd site-officials?” questioned the vice president.

Murthy cites data from documents obtained through RTI, which show the can rental costs at a monthly-average of around Rs 50 lakh. Namma metro has 1,230 regular employees working as loco pilots, station managers and more while other works such as construction and housekeeping are outsourced. ‘Why does Namma Metro hire 769 contract employees?’, questioned Murthy.

BMRCL has hired 500 contract employees without requirement likely with irregularities in requirement process, alleged Murthy. Also, promotion of employees are also not structured, with some employees are promoted with an exorbitant hike in pay due to influence from higher officials, he added.

Further, he alleged financial irregularities in allotment of retail spaces, advertisement and parking management at stations. Managing director of BMRCL, Ajay Seth has decided to discuss the matter with the union.

After Chennai And Delhi, Bengaluru Metro To Install Platform Screen Doors At New Underground Stations

The upcoming underground metro stations in Bengaluru might soon get Platform Screen Doors (PSDs), as reported by Times Of India (TOI).

PSDs, which are new additions to subway stations across the world, are full-height, total barriers between the station floor and ceiling. They prevent accidental falls of the platforms onto the lower track area. Suicide attempts and homicides by pushing are also averted.

Metro stations in Chennai and Delhi have already installed such PSDs. “These PSDs will help reduce air-conditioning costs at underground stations. However, we have not taken a decision on installing them in the existing ones as they are expensive,” said BL Yeshwanth Chavan, spokesperson, BMRCL.

Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) is a joint venture of Government of India and Government of Karnataka that oversees the implementation of the Bengaluru metro rail. It is one of the largest operational metro rail networks in the country.

“It’s high time these glass screens are introduced, at least in crowded stations like Byappanahalli and Kempegowda (Majestic). Security guards at Metro stations find it difficult to manage the swelling crowd, particularly during peak hours. PSDs can prevent accidents, especially when stations are extremely crowded. They will make commuters feel more secured,” said a metro rail user.

Work On Eight-Lane Bengaluru-Mysuru Highway To Begin In January 2019

Work on an eight-lane highway connecting Bengaluru with Mysuru will commence on 8 January 2019. On Saturday, Chief Minister H D Kumaraswamy made the announcement after he reviewed national highway projects in the state. He has directed officials to begin the process of obtaining clearances for the initiative.

Karnataka Road Development Corporation Ltd (KRDCL) and the Revenue Department have been asked to complete impending works. Furthermore, the Forest Department has been approached with requests for clearances so that the project can gain momentum.

Post completion of the project, the travel time between the two cities will reportedly reduce substantially. As much as 1,954 km of national highway works are being carried out currently in Karnataka and the Chief Minister said that another 516 km will be added.

Officials have been given the task of identifying land that can be given alternatively to those who are going to lose it due to the acquisition process. The land then will have to be approved by the Deputy Commissioner of Ramanagara.

The New Indian Express reported that a meeting was held between several representatives of the National Highways Authority of India and Public Works Department Minister H D Revanna.

Work On Delhi-Mumbai Expressway To Begin Soon As 80-KM Land Acquisition In Haryana Now Stands Completed

The Delhi-Mumbai expressway project is gaining momentum as the 80-km land acquisition in Haryana has been completed. The bidding process for the project is currently on and the construction work is expected to commence soon, Times of India has reported.

“The bidding process is currently going on for the entire project. The bids will be received on 5 December, after which the work will be awarded and thereafter it can start. We hope to complete the project in two years’ time,” a senior National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) official said to the paper.

The eight-lane expressway will cross Sohna in Gurugram and link the western peripheral expressway with the Delhi-Noida-Delhi flyway in Delhi.

“In the Haryana portion, 80 km of this expressway will come, and land acquisition has been done for the same.” the official said.

The land acquisition for the eight-lane 1,250-km expressway project is still going on in Rajasthan (380 km), Gujarat (120 km), Madhya Pradesh (300 km) and Maharashtra (370 km).

The project is being built at an estimated cost of Rs 60,000 crore and will reduce the distance between the national capital and Mumbai from existing the 1,450 km to 1,200 km. The time taken for traveling the distance will also be cut to 12 hours. At present, it takes around 24 hours to cover the distance through NH-8.

As per the report, the speed limit on the Delhi-Mumbai expressway will be around 120 kmph.
