Bengaluru: Now Book Namma Metro Tickets On Your Smartphone, BMRLC Plans QR-Code Based Service

0

Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) is intending to go smart with QR based tickets, Times of India has reported.

BMRCL is working on a plan to introduce QR-based tickets that Metro users can buy through a mobile app by selecting origin, destination and number of passengers, after which the app will display the QR code which could be tapped at the QR enabled Automatic Fare Collection (AFC) gates at Metro stations.

“We’ll upgrade the existing system in less than a year,” says BMRCL MD Ajay Seth. Stations under phase 2 project will have advanced AFC gates that accept QR-code tickets as well as open-loop cards, he added.

The metro rail corporations in Kochi, Delhi and Mumbai have already tied up with digital wallets like Paytm and Ridlr that help commuters pass the AFC gates using their mobile phones.

The idea of having a common mobility card in Bengaluru is however still some steps away.

Open-loop cards are universal and can be used to shop and pay for parking, and can be integrated with other modes of transport while closed-loop cards can be used only in one transport. Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) is expected to launch a new semi closed-loop cards for passengers by the end of November after the debacle of Axis Bank open-loop cards.

Madhya Pradesh Metro Plans Operating At Full Pace: Dilip Buildcon Receives LoA For Indore And Bhopal Projects

0

The Urban Administration Development Department of Madhya Pradesh and its Metro Rail Co Ltd (MPMRCL) have submitted a letter of acceptance (LoA) to Dilip Buildicon (DBL) for the metro rail projects at Indore and Bhopal. The phase-1 is valued at Rs 247.06 crore and Rs 228.96 crore respectively for the Indore and Bhopal metros.

A total contract worth Rs 476.02 crore has been won by the highway builder group DBL. Metro Rail News has reported that DBL received the LoA for the projects on Friday, 5 October.

For the first time in India, Bhopal Metro project is based on the lines of Rapid Transit Light Metro (RTLM) system. Since Bhopal is also a hub of education, the metro comes in handy for students. The total length is about 35 km, with three corridors. The corridors proposed are between DMRC, M P Nagar, Mandideep Suruchi Nagar, BHEL, Bairagarh and Mandideep.

A depot near the international airport was proposed earlier, however an expert quoted by Metro Rail News as said, “The strategic importance of the location cannot be understated, but the Railway over Bridge (RoB) is a major hindrance. Design changes in RoB are being considered so that the Stud Farms location remains a viable alternative for a Metro rail depot.”

Huge Relief For Bengaluru Commuters: Majestic Metro Station Finally Has A Footover Bridge Connection To Bus Terminal

0

After missing several deadlines, the foot-over bridge connecting the metro station with the bus terminus of BMTC and KSRTC at the Nadaprabhu Hiriya Kempegowda Metro Station in Bengaluru’s Majestic was finally inaugurated on Thursday (4 October), more than two years after the metro’s operation at Majestic began.

The ceremonial inauguration was attended by Karnataka Chief Minister HD Kumaraswamy, as well as his deputy and Bengaluru Development Minister G Parameshwara. Other political leaders present at the event include MLA and KPCC president Dinesh Gundu Rao, Bengaluru Central MP P C Mohan, Mayor Gangambika Mallikarjun and Deputy Mayor Ramila Umashankar, among others.

The long-overdue footbridge will improve the number of people using the metro and bus services while reducing the number of vehicles on the road according to urban mobility experts. The commuters were previously forced to use a garbage-filled subway or dodge busy traffic crossing the busy road. The bridge will shorten the distance by 250 meters.

Although the bridge was said to have been completed this past summer, the inauguration was delayed. A six coach metro train on the Purple Line was also flagged off by the dignitaries. The metro in Majestic has been operational since April 2016. It later became an integration point for the Purple and Green Line, but the construction of the foot overbridge connectors between the different modes of public transport began only in January 2018.

Sanjeev Dhyamanavar, an urban mobility expert at Prajaa, said, “It is good to see that finally, the Majestic FOB is ready. But the issue in Yeshwanthpur still needs to be looked into.” Urban matter experts have previously pointed out that footbridges like these should have been planned well in advance. They emphasised that it wasn’t just a matter of convenience, but safety as well, as reported by The News Minute.

Bengaluru Metro Gets Its Second Six-Coach Train, Third Set To Be Commissioned By Month-End

0

The second six coach metro train has been flagged off by Chief Minister H D Kumaraswamy on Thursday (October 4) at the Kempegowda metro station in Bengaluru.

“The six-coach train has a carrying capacity of over 2,000 passengers at a time. We will operate it on the busy East-West Corridor (Baiyappanahalli – Mysuru road),” said BMRCL MD Ajay Seth, as reported by MRN. He added saying that over 19,000 passengers use services on the East-West between 9.30 am and 10.30 am but the North-South Corridor (Nagasandra – Yelechenahalli) records a ridership of only 8,000.

The BMRCL, Seth said, would introduce the third set of six-coach trains in October-end. The City received the first six-coach train in June this year. The process of converting all the 53 coach train into six-coach train would take place next year.

In March 2017, Bengaluru based BEML Ltd had won Rs 1,421 crore contract from BMRCL to supply 150 intermediate metro coaches.

Disappointment For Bengaluru Commuters: Yelachenahalli-Anjanapura Metro Misses Deadline

0

The declaration of the earlier government to open 6.39 km Yelachenahalli-Anjanapura line by December 2018 has turned out to be a shallow promise. Anjanapura will be connected to the metro line only by 2019, Deccan Herald has reported.

Bengaluru Development Minister of the earlier government KJ George during an inspection of metro work had announced that the line would be open by December.

Ajay Seth, Managing director of Bengaluru Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) said that the civil work on Anjanapura rail line would be completed only by April 2019.

“We will be able to commission both the lines (Anjanapura and Kengeri) in 2020. I cannot give the precise month (for commissioning) at this juncture,” he said.

The work on the Kengeri line has been severely hit by its 3.95 km Mysore Road-Pattangere stretch contractor, due to Infrastructure Leasing and Financial Services (IL&FS) being mired in a financial crisis.

“The contractor has finished 75 per cent of the work, and we are looking into the issues. Work is going on, and the line will be commissioned in 2020,” Seth said.

Tender were invited in February by BMRCL for the Silk board-KR Puram Metro line on Outer Ring Road (Phase 2A). Bid submission deadline was extended in May. The financial bids are not opened yet.

As per the daily, crisis-laden IL&FS has emerged as the lowest bidder.

On the decision of awarding the tender, MD said that BMRCL is still looking into the matter.

“We have not yet awarded the tender for ORR Metro. There are issues, which are being closely evaluated. We would not like to take any knee-jerk decision,” he said.

Pune Metro Now Rs 185 Crore Dearer, Route Diverted To Steer Away From Aga Khan Palace

0

The Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation (MMRC) will be diverting the route of the Pune Metro due to the rejection of its current route by National Monuments Authority which refused to permit its current route, Metro Rail News has reported. Its current route was in the vicinity of Aga Khan Palace which is a protected monument.

The diversion will now increase the cost of the Pune Metro project by Rs 185 crores. In a communication to Pune Metro, the MMRC suggested three options out of which it recommended the second option. This involves diversion of the route from Gunjan Chowk and an increase of the length of viaduct by 0.92 km.

As per the Ancient Monuments and Archaeological Sites and Remains Act of 1958, no construction is allowed within a 100-metre radius of a protected monument. The Aga Khan Palace was declared as a nationally protected monument in the year 2003.

Mumbai-Ahmedabad Bullet Train Project Gets Make In India Touch: Railways Pitches To Build Coaches Indigenously

0

The bullet train project connecting Mumbai to Ahmedabad is one of the most ambitious projects of the country. Raising its ambitions a notch high, Indian Railways is planning to manufacture bullet trains in India giving the project a “Make in India” touch, reported Hindustan Times.

Initially the bullet trains which are known as Shinkansen in Japan will be imported from Japan but Indian railways wants to manufacture them in India at a later stage. Railways is willing to offer one of its factories in India to a Japanese company for manufacturing of the coaches, officials of the Railways told the daily.

In September, a presentation was given by the Indian railways to a working group – comprising of representatives from India and Japan monitoring the implementation of the project. In the presentation, modern coach factory (MCF) in Raebareli, Uttar Pradesh was projected as a potential bullet train coach manufacturing site by the railways.

“MCF has robotic production lines and can be ideal for bullet train coaches. We will have to transfer the technology from one of the companies (manufacturing such coaches in Japan),” official told.

The expected local manufacturing cost of the bullet train coaches has not been worked out yet.

“Modern Coach Factory has been set up for producing state-of-the-art coaches for operational speeds of 160 -200 kmph with an annual capacity of 1,000 coaches. Production capacity is being further enhanced to 2,000-plus coaches per year in next 1 to 2 years,” said an MCF official.

“MCF is interested in manufacturing indigenously self-propelled medium/high speed coaches at the rate of 500 coaches in the next two years or so for Metro MEMU (mainline electric multiple unit) and EMU train sets. It can also produce bullet train coaches,” official said.

According to a National High Speed Rail corporation (NHRC) official, NHRC, in the first phase of the bullet train corridor, will purchase 18 Shinkansen train sets from Japan which would cost around Rs 7,000 crore.

In the second phase parts of the train will be imported and assembled in India. It is in the third phase that Indian railways want to manufacture them locally in its facility.

“This will not only generate employment but also give a push to ‘Make in India,” said another railway official told.

Multiple stations of the Indian Railways across the country are being redeveloped to equip them with modern facilities. First such railway station whose redevelopment work will be completed in December is the Habibganj station in Madhya Pradesh’s Bhopal, Financial Express has reported.

Minister of Railways Piyush Goyal recently visited to see the progress of work at the railway station which is being built on the lines of Germany’s Heidelberg station. He, after reviewing, has expressed satisfaction on the progress.

The Narendra Modi government wants to develop railway station of India and their ill-used spaces into an airport like space with retail spaces so that passengers can spend time comfortably while waiting for trains.

Rs 450 crore are being spent on the redevelopment of the railway station, out of which Rs 100 crore will be spent on station development and Rs 350 crore has been sanctioned for the development of commercial space.

According to the daily’s report, Habibganj station will have a glass dome like structure which will serve as the entrance to the station. The station will be a green building with LED lighting. Waste water at the station will be treated for reuse. It will have cafeterias, a food plaza and a well-equipped lounge.

In order to decongest the station, exit underpass is being made for passengers de-boarding trains along with passenger holding area on the platform. On the western side of the station, there will be commercial establishments, a bus terminal and office lobbies. Service apartments will be built outside the station along with hotels, hospitals, spas and a convention centre will be outside on the eastern side of the station, the first of its kind in India.

The Indian Railway Stations Development Corporation (IRSDC) and the Bhopal-based Bansal Group are developing the station. Bansal group will operate and maintain the station for eight years.

It’s Raining Tiles In Chennai Metro: Passenger Gets Eight Stitches After False Ceiling Collapses On Her Head

0

A 28-year-old woman was left severely injured after a tile from the station’s false ceiling fell on her head which left her bleeding profusely. Vijaya had been returning to her residence in Bharati Nagar, Chennai after a holiday in Ooty, reported The News Minute.

Following the incident, eight stitches were administered to her, a report by the Shenoy Nagar police said. She was admitted to Billroth Hospital. Earlier, another passenger had a similar incident at Egmore station. Glass panels installed in Nehru Park and other stations have also reportedly developed cracks.

the report goes on to say that these incidents are happening due to the low quality glass fittings and improper workmanship.

TNM quoted a senior official of Chennai Metro on the condition of anonymity as saying, “Clearly the contractors that were hired haven’t done a good job if parts of the ceiling are crashing down. They could have tried to save money by using smaller quantities of the adhesive which predominantly contains mortar. The contractors were working on it day and night and quality has suffered.”
